Power Lines

A lot of people dislike power lines in a photo composition. They tell me the picture would be so much better without them. I sometimes agree. Power lines can really cut up a composition, especially when it's an otherwise spotless landscape. But that's one of the reasons I love including them in photos.

For example, in this photo, the organic shapes of the vibrant tree are dissected by the harsh black power lines cutting across it. The dark bark of the tree is similar to the black lines and draws attention to natural lines of the tree and the manufactured lines of the cables. And in the top corners, the power lines almost frame the composition by cutting through the corners. The diagonal movement of the tree lines is exaggerated by the power lines cutting through it. In the case of this composition and many others, I think the power lines add more depth and movement to an otherwise stagnant photo.
