Shutter Priority

I've been messing around with pet portraiture recently. I take my camera with me when I go to the dog park with my pup, Persimmon. And I have found that there is a steep learning curve with these action shots.

Pretty quickly, I switched my camera setting to shutter-priority. And, when the sun is out, I find I can get good action freezing with a shutter speed of around 2000 per second. I also set the shutter to continuously take photos while I hold the shutter button down.

I find the best photos occur when the dogs look at me for a couple seconds. The direct eye contact is so much more engaging. And I especially love when their eyes catch the light, making them glow.

The composition of this photo includes strong diagonals and a really effective aperture. The golden retriever behind the black dog is not in focus, but the action and excitement of the scene is still conveyed. And the duplication of the dogs' positions in mid-air is so effective in pushing the eye around the photo. I love photographing happy dogs.
