This is one of my favorites photos of 2022. I had just started my Master's program in the fall and hadn't made time for art of any kind. I barely had time for myself. I remember this day because I had decided to get up just after sunrise, which wasn't too early because it was just before daylight savings ended in November. I was tired of feeling like I had no outlet of expression. I missed making art. Taking photos and editing.
I stopped at one of my favorite coffee shops and got a hot chocolate to go. I drove only a block up the street and had to pull over because I saw these people working on the roof of one of the buildings in front of me. The sun was rising behind them and created this crisp silhouette. I love this composition as well. The image is split harshly by the blackness of the building. Then the three individuals and the bird break up the split across the middle. Even the transparency of the water bottle is so intriguing to look at. It feels dramatic and mundane at the same time.
I went on to have a lovely morning of taking photos across the valley. Many of them ended up in my Ashland portfolio on this site. Each one brings me back to this morning. It reminds me of my struggle to balance school and my art practice. Which is still ongoing...
